Chinatown and Ginger Chews

Last summer our family went to San Francisco. One of our first stops was Chinatown. We watched as people picked out the fish they wanted for dinner. The shopkeeper would take the live fish out of the tank and slam it onto the ground and then prepare it for taking home. A different experience than our grocery store visits.

We love the fortune cookie factory that is FREE unless you take a picture. Then you have to pay 50 cents. I have to admit I was expecting a lot bigger "factory." But it was a really fun experience to watch them making their cookies.

Besides the awesome cultural experience we had walking around Chinatown, we were on a quest to find one of our favorite snacks. We are completely hooked on Ginger chews. We usually get them from our grocery store, but we know there are more authentic ginger chews out there, so we figured Chinatown was the place to find them.

We were first introduced to Ginger Chews by my husbands brother who served his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Taiwan. These were so strong, I could hardly keep them in my mouth! We found a more mellow version from The Ginger People. These little snacks are perfect for a 72 hour kit. They last forever and they are a snack with a kick! They can be found at most health food stores.

Anyway, back to Chinatown, we did find some Ginger Chews from China, but they actually were not as strong as the The Ginger People version! We had fun in the hunt for them. It will be the closest we will probably every get to China. Have you heard about the family that moved to China for 6 months? This family is so amazing! It is one of my favorite all time blogs.
